SP2 Woes
If there are too many holes, there is not much wall left in your firewall.
It’s true. Microsoft know a lot about security holes. And now, they’ve admitted it! I installed SP2 on Wednesday, and instantly regretted it. It’s a waste of time; I don’t use the internet from my PC, so don’t need ‘Advanced Security Technologies’. It took years to install. Everything runs even slower now. I had to spend half an hour killing off the Security Center (surely cent
re? no localisation?) bubbles from the system tray. It’s gone and reset half my registry so my lovely interface hacks have to be re-entered. And there’s a big black gap where the startup screen is meant to say Home Edition!! WHY?!

If only…

iTunes decided last night that 16 hours of music on my Shuffle amounted to 0kb. If only.
Apple Support Site Hole!!
You can browse around a small part of Apple’s servers by going to http://selfservice.apple.com/wss. Nothing seriously interesting there, but the test page is a laugh!
Amazon Sell Book Bits
Amazon have announced two new schemes to help change the way we see books. The first allows you to buy just the pages or chapters you want from a book, and the second gives an additional online version to customers who buy a hard copy. So maybe you’ll be able to just buy the last chapter of the last Harry Potter, and skip past all the filler that just pushes the RRP up! Brilliant!

Sony’s Big Recall
Sony has issued a product recall for all the power adapters sold with the slimline model of the PlayStation 2 between August and December 2004. What they fail to mention is how you’re meant to play with no plug…hmm. Check out
PS2AC.com for more details (now doesn’t that sound like an interesting site!).

Google Earth Archaeology
“The first case of archaeology practiced in one’s pajamas” as David Chartier put it; an Italian programmer has found ancient Roman remains using Google Earth. Luca Mori, who was examining the surroundings of his hometown Sorbolo, apparently noticed a 500 metre long shaded region, which somehow he connected to the meander of an ancient river. He then spotted some ‘unusual rectangular shadows’, which he decided were the inner courtyards of a villa.
After calling some archaeologists, they confirmed the find. Initially it was thought to be a Bronze Age village, but now is predicted to be a Roman Villa after ceramics were discovered. A dig will take place if the local authorities permit it. I attempted to find the site on Google Maps, but I ended up in Antarctica. Can you discover anything ancient on Google Earth?

Google Earth goes National Geographic
“Have you ever dreamed of Africa while reading National Geographic? The exotic photographs and thoughtful articles take you there with a magical sense of place. Today [16 Sep] we embraced that magic by releasing Google Earth data layers that index National Geographic stories, images, journals, and even a live webcam in Africa.”
Google Earth now has a National Geographic layer, which when enabled shows news stories, webcams and pictures relating to the part of Africa you are looking at. Fascinating.

Grafik Dynamo
This site chooses random pictures from blogs and random phrases from news stories and puts them together, comic-strip style. Sometimes it makes sense, but most of the time it’s just extremely funny! Have a look at the Grafik Dynamo.

Biroweb
Awww! What a nice idea for a site. This site is made entirely from biro drawings. No text, no nothing, just pics of biro doodles. The content is kind of weird….though the concept is nice. I don’t entirely see the point of biro-web.com, but that doesn’t bother me as it’s a really lovely site. If you actually understand any of what’s going on, leave a comment!
